My Artist Story

Leli Holmes

I began painting professionally in 2017, originally creating small watercolor notecards that I sold in local shops and at outdoor pop-up markets throughout the Lowcountry. In 2020, like many parents, I paused much of my creative work to homeschool our three children during the pandemic years. What began as a small creative outlet before that season eventually evolved into something much larger.

Over time, I returned to painting with a renewed sense of purpose, creating larger original works and fine art prints. Eventually, clients began requesting commissioned paintings for their homes. With a background in graphic design and years spent translating clients’ ideas into visual content, I discovered that listening closely and creating meaningful, personal artwork came naturally to me. That experience became an unexpected asset as I moved into commissioned fine art.

I believe my background in design has heavily influenced my painting style and artistic perspective. I am drawn to painting outdoors in nature, constantly searching for unique natural motifs and moments that can be highlighted through color, texture, and composition. Pattern, intricate detail, and vibrant color have become signatures of my work.

Originally from the Pacific Northwest, I have always felt most at home near the water and outdoors in nature. Since moving to the South, the Lowcountry has become an endless source of inspiration — from its rich marine life and winding marshes to its colorful foliage and coastal atmosphere.

People often ask to see my studio, and I usually tell them to meet me in my backyard, because that is where much of my work is created. My children and our Golden Doodle puppy are both my constant studio companions and greatest critics.

When I’m not at the easel, you can usually find me outdoors with my family — hiking, running, visiting the beach, or simply enjoying a quiet moment with a hot cup of coffee and a good book.

Before pursuing fine art full time, I spent many years as a professional graphic designer and was honored to receive several ADDY Awards for excellence in design. More recently, I received an Honorable Mention for a body of work at the Hilton Head Honey Horn Artist Market and have been featured in LOCAL Life, Pink Magazine, and The Bluffton Sun.

My latest creative venture has been expanding my artwork into textiles, fabric, and wallpaper design — allowing my paintings and patterns to live beyond the canvas and become part of the home itself. You can explore my more of why textile collection on Spoonflower.
